(Gonzales) – It was standing room only at a reception held at Mike Anderson’s Seafood in Gonzales on November 17, 2008. Sponsored by Ricky Thomas of Blue Runner Foods and Gonzales Mayor Johnny Berthelot, community members were invited to learn more about Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and its imminent opening in Ascension Parish.

“Mary Bird Perkins coming to Gonzales is an asset you can’t put a value on,” said the Mayor. “It will enhance the health of our community for years to come.” Richard Lipsey, chairman, board of directors, Mary Bird Perkins, said, “It’s good for Gonzales, it’s good for St. Elizabeth Hospital and it’s good for Mary Bird Perkins. But the bottom line is that it’s good for the people we’re going to treat.”

President and CEO of St. Elizabeth Hospital, Dee LeJeune, was equally pleased. “We expect to be able to serve about 98% of the people now traveling to Baton Rouge. To bring cancer services right here, and extend those services to St. James and St. John parishes, is wonderful. This is a great celebration – a dream becoming a reality.”

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Elizabeth Hospital expects to begin treating patients in early January, 2009.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years with locations in Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, Houma and soon to be in Gonzales. It has comprehensive cancer programs with Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. These programs are accredited by the American College of Surgeons – the gold standard for community-based cancer care. For more information visit www.marybird.org.
