(Covington) – Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and the Junior League of Greater Covington partnered to sponsor a free breast screening in Covington on October 16, 2008 at the Covington Wal-Mart, 880 N. Hwy 190. “We chose Mary Bird Perkins because they have a superb reputation in the medical field,” said Ginny Crowe, president, Junior League of Greater Covington. “Their mobile screening unit, the Early Bird, makes it possible to reach women in the community who are unable to get breast screenings through traditional means.”
“The mobile unit from Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge is also present at our breast cancer screenings,” explained Cindy Williamson, MBP development director, Northshore/Florida Parishes. “Together we provide a comprehensive mobile breast diagnostic program that offers physical breast exams and mammography services to underserved and underinsured women.”
“Almost 40 women came out for the free screening,” Crow said. “We were honored to partner with Mary Bird Perkins and hope to make this an annual event. We urge other organizations to consider doing the same.”
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years with locations in Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, Houma and soon to be in Gonzales. It has comprehensive cancer programs with Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. These programs are accredited by the American College of Surgeons – the gold standard for community-based cancer care. For more information visit www.marybird.org.
