(Baton Rouge, LA) – The Louisiana Cancer Registrar’s Association (LCRA) recently selected Dianne Griffin as their Distinguished Member of the Year. The annual award is presented to one member who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to the Association.

Through her work with the LCRA, Dianne demonstrated professionalism, leadership and a desire for public service. Seeing challenges as opportunities, Dianne brought her positive energy and enthusiasm to the organization. Other LCRA members recognized these outstanding qualities and nominated her for the prestigious honor.

Serving her second term as Treasurer for LCRA, Griffin’s eagerness to help cancer patients and their family members is evident in the work that she does as the Quality Control Specialist for the Louisiana Tumor Registry and Tumor Conference Coordinator for Mary Bird Perkins. Her sincere dedication is carried over into her volunteer service as well. Griffin received the MBP Volunteer of the Year Award for dedicating 70.5 hours during 2006 to assist the Center’s outreach and education mission. In fact, Griffin’s 70.5 hours set a Center record.

"She is always there to lend a helping hand,” said Renea Duffin, executive director, CARE Network, MBP. “We are fortunate to work with someone like Dianne who has an incredible work ethic, a positive attitude and a passion for helping others. On behalf of everyone at MBP, where Dianne inspires people daily, we congratulate her on this well-deserved honor.”

The Louisiana Cancer Registrar’s Association (LCRA) was founded in 1977 for the purpose of providing educational opportunities, workshops, seminars, and symposiums for registrars and their associates in order to improve the quality and uniformity of registries in Louisiana. The primary responsibility of a cancer registrar is to assure that complete and accurate data are collected and maintained for all cancer patients diagnosed and/or treated within an institution or other defined population such as the state of Louisiana. There are three reasons to keep this data in a cancer registry: Education, Lifetime Patient Follow-up, and Research. A cancer registry is a data system designed for the collection, management and analysis of data on persons with the diagnosis of a cancer.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years with locations in Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, Houma and soon to be in Gonzales. It has comprehensive cancer programs with Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington.
