(Covington) – To thank Hammond and Northshore donors for their loyal support and interest in Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, a reception was held at Heiner Brau Brewery in Covington on October 2. Hosted by owners Rob and Pam Mingo, approximately 40 guests strolled through the microbrewery co-owned and operated by Henryk and Angela Orlik sampling beer custom brewed by master German brewer Henryk Orlik.

President and CEO of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Todd Stevens, delivered a ‘State of the Center’ update, sharing several pieces of very exciting news with those assembled. Dr. Charles Wood, one of the nine radiation oncologists practicing at Mary Bird Perkins and Marielle Howard, a cancer survivor treated at the Center, both spoke about the passion they have for what Mary Bird Perkins offers to people right in their own backyard.

“To have an organization like Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in our community is something to be proud of,” said guest Cindy Harlan, vice chair, Greater Northshore Business & Community Council. “No one in the community is denied radiation treatment due to inability to pay, and their ‘Early Bird’ screenings focus on cancer early detection for the medically underserved. They are concerned about everyone’s healthcare. Mary Bird Perkins is determined to beat cancer. That’s impressive.”

The reception was generously underwritten by the Southeast Louisiana Radiation Oncology Group. Chef John Besh and Luke's Restaurant catered the event.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years with locations in Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, Houma and soon to be in Gonzales. It has comprehensive cancer programs with Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. These programs are accredited by the American College of Surgeons – the gold standard for community-based cancer care. For more information visit www.marybird.org.
