Mary Bird Perkins’ Fund-Raising Volunteers Enjoy Appreciation Reception
2007 Fund-raising Volunteers Help Raise $2.2 Million for Cancer Center

(Baton Rouge) – Over 60 Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center community volunteers attended a volunteer appreciation reception hosted by Mockler Beverage-Budweiser on March 11, 2008 at its facility on Reiger Road. From 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. guests enjoyed delicious food from Louisiana Bayou Bistro, sampled specialty beer, toured the Mockler Beverage-Budweiser facility and shared in fun and fellowship.
Guests were officially welcomed by Shelley Mockler, annual giving volunteer and chairman of Mary Bird Perkins’ Development Committee. Todd Stevens, CEO and president of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, and Richard Lipsey, chairman, MBPCC Board of Directors, thanked the volunteers who helped raise $2.2 million in 2007 in support of the mission of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Stevens explained that all funds raised are returned to the community to support the Center’s CARE Network of cancer services, awareness and education, research and early detection, including the many free community cancer screenings held throughout the year.
The 2007 Annual Giving Campaign raised $917,397. The 2007 NTG Classic Golf Tournament, MaryBirdAuction.com and other volunteer-led special events netted over $330,000.
Bill O’Quin, cancer survivor and 2008 Annual Giving Campaign chairman, rallied the troops for this year’s campaign.
“Our volunteers are the core of our development efforts,” commented Carolyn A. Chassee, CFRE the Center’s new vice president for Development. “They are our true partners and are central to our success. We’re so very appreciative of everything they do for Mary Bird Perkins and the fight against cancer.”
The 2007 Annual Giving Campaign Chairman was Jim McIlwain. His Vice Chairman was Bill O’Quin. Filling out the 2007 Annual Giving Campaign Cabinet were Immediate Past Chairman, Paul R. About Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center: Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years. It is the only independent, nonprofit cancer treatment, education and research facility in Louisiana providing state-of-the-art radiation therapy to all community residents regardless of ability to pay. Mary Bird Perkins has integrated cancer programs with Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. These programs are accredited by the American College of Surgeons – the gold standard for community-based cancer care. About the C.A.R.E. Network: The mission of the C.A.R.E. Network (Cancer Support Services, Awareness and Education, Research and Early Detection) is to lessen the burden of cancer in the community. Established in 2002, it is funded by gifts from the community and provides hundreds of programs and services, including free cancer screenings, to thousands of people every year. The research and academic medical physics partnership with MBP and Louisiana State University is also funded in part by the C.A.R.E. Network. The Center has locations in Baton Rouge, Covington and Hammond.
