(Baton Rouge) – Enjoy the excitement of online bidding while supporting a lifesaving cause. In its ninth year, MaryBirdAuction.com features a large array of unusual, collectible, fun, and one-of-a kind items all donated to help Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center provide free cancer screenings and programs throughout the communities it serves. During 2006, 4,515 people were screened at 122 free cancer screenings across southeast Louisiana including screenings for breast, colorectal, prostate and skin cancer.

Online bidding opened to the public on October 17, 2007 and ends precisely at 4 p.m. (CDT) Sunday, November 18, 2007. From 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 18, bids may be phoned in by calling (225) 490-CURE. “There are more than 300 items featured at www.marybirdauction.com this year,” said Amy Berret, auction chair. “We have jewelry for everyone’s taste and budget, sporting and hunting items for the sportsmen in your life, a Mike the Tiger oil painting for that hard to please teenager, and all kinds of gift certificates.” There is truly something for everyone, she said -- from belly dancing lessons to dinner with Mayor Holden.

“A multitude of benefits make the entire auction experience easy, enjoyable and exciting,” said Lee Rayner, website chair. “Placing maximum or proxy bids is really the way to go,” she advised. “Once you’re registered on the auction website, you simply enter the highest amount you are willing to pay for an item. This becomes your maximum bid. The system will bid automatically on your behalf, up to that amount.” This means your bidding will be taken care of electronically and you don’t have to keep checking on its status. You will be notified by email if you are outbid, allowing you to increase your maximum bid if you desire.
