(Baton Rouge) – May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers. It is estimated that more than one million Americans develop skin cancer every year, according to national statistics from the American Cancer Society.
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center have teamed up to offer free skin cancer screenings on Saturday, May 12 and Wednesday, May 16. Mary Bird Perkins and Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center in Baton Rouge enjoy an integrated cancer program accredited by the American College of Surgeons – the gold standard for community-based cancer care.
“We are happy to partner with Our Lake of the Lake on skin cancer awareness,” said Renea Austin-Duffin, executive director of Mary Bird Perkins’ C.A.R.E. Network. “Skin cancer accounts for more than 40% of all cancers every year. The doctors and staff of both organizations are committed to educating the public on important cancer prevention information – and this month we are focusing on helping the general public protect the skin they’re in.”
These screenings are for men and women 40 and older who do not have insurance and have not been screened for skin cancer by a physician in the last 12 months.
