St. Tammany Parish Hospital and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center to Hold Free Prostate Cancer Screning

Early detection of cancer saves lives. Screening is a method of detecting cancer early before symptoms occur.

COVINGTON, LA- St. Tammany Parish Hospital (STPH) and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Covington will host a free community-based prostate cancer screening on Saturday, August 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Community Wellness Center, 1505 N. Florida Street, in Covington, Louisiana.

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men.

"This screening is for men age 45 and older who do not have a doctor or have not been screened in the past 12 months," Chryl Corizzo, RN, BSN, OCN and STPH Cancer Program Director said.

The prostate screening is performed by a physician and includes a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and physical exam. No fasting is required.

Louisiana's cancer incidence rates for most common cancers are in line with the rest of the nation. However, the state has inordinately high cancer mortality rates.

"This clearly indicates the need for early detection interventions," Kate Messina, Mary Bird Perkins early detection director said. "Screenings offer the potential to diagnose cancer at its earliest stage when the greatest chance for a cure exists."

Registration is requested. To register or for more information, please call (985) 898-4581.
