On Thursday, May 28th, there was a special evening reception at Mockler Beverage-Budweiser honoring the original Mary Bird Perkins Golf Tournament Founding Committee. Referred to as the "19th Hole" in celebration of the tournament's 19th anniversary, the reception paid homage to a group of visionaries whose goal was to make a difference in the lives of local cancer patients. The impact of their efforts has raised over $1.2 million since 1990 for the fight against cancer.
Those who were on the original committee and invested their time in an early effort to establish a charity golf tournament include Hillar Moore Jr., Clayton Lester, Jay Campbell, Gary Mockler, T.J. Moran, William H. Wright Jr., Gary Sligar, Gerry Lane, Thomas H. Turner, Charles Valuzzo, Bobby Duhe', Dean Alexander and Cathy Thompson. EBR Mayor-President Kip Holden presented each of the honorees with a special gift on behalf of Mary Bird Perkins and commented on the impact of the funds apportioned for free screenings. "Community outreach is making a difference," he said. "Don't give up. We have survivors. Don't let them down."
When asked why he continued to stay involved with MBP, local restaurateur T.J. Moran explained, "Mary Bird Perkins saved my life. The quality of care I got when I was diagnosed was a godsend. I could stay close to home. I got a second opinion in Houston and they sent me back to Mary Bird. Mary Bird Perkins is a blessing to this community."
