(Baton Rouge) - At the April 2009 Board of Directors meeting of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, new volunteer leadership was elected to help carry out the mission of the Center.

For over 35 years, the Center's mission has been to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer through expert treatment, compassionate care, early detection, research, and education. As a nonprofit community-owned cancer center, Mary Bird Perkins is governed by a volunteer board of directors.

J. Gerard Jolly, KPMG LLP, was elected to serve as the Center's board chairman. "Ilook forward, with great humility, to being a part of the dynamic expansion of Mary Bird Perkins' mission and the hope it is bringing to citizens throughout the southeast Louisiana region," said Jolly.

Richard A. Lipsey will remain on the board for two additional years as Immediate Past Chairman. Other officers elected include Donna M. Saurage, community volunteer, vice chair; Tom J. Meek Jr., M.D., Dermatology Clinic, secretary; D. Randolph Waesche, Resource Management, Inc., treasurer. New Board members elected for three-year terms include G. Lee Griffin, Chase (retired); Bill O'Quin, Financial Services Online; and D. Randolph Waesche.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years with locations in Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, Houma and Gonzales. It has comprehensive cancer programs with Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington.
