Prevention Education

Mary Bird Perkins provides prevention and educational opportunities for patients, the community and medical professionals through many classes and seminars held throughout the year.

Lymphedema Prevention Education
Lymphedema refers to swelling that generally occurs in the arms or legs. One of the causes of lymphedema is surgery to remove lymph nodes during cancer treatment. Those at risk for lymphedema can learn how to reduce the risk for this condition during a one-on-one clinic available in our Baton Rouge, Covington, Gonzales and Hammond Centers.

Tobacco Cessation
The National Cancer Institute has indicated that there are many benefits to those who quit using tobacco. The Tobacco Cessation program goal is to help patients and community members be free from the harmful effects of tobacco.

Free group classes are conducted by a certified tobacco treatment specialist and are available to the general public meeting once a week for eight weeks. In some cases, one-on-one counseling may be available.

You will learn to overcome the three most difficult barriers to quitting:
  1. nicotine dependence
  2. stress management
  3. breaking behavioral habits

In 2010, Mary Bird Perkins held 6 tobacco cessation classes. 39 people completed the program and 49% of the participants quit using tobacco.
