(Baton Rouge, LA) -- A Volunteer Appreciation Reception was held by the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Office of Development on the evening of February 25 at the home of Jerry and Donna Jolly in Baton Rouge. The reception is held each year to show the Center's sincere appreciation for every volunteer's efforts in raising philanthropic support and to recognize individuals with five or more years of volunteer service helping Mary Bird Perkins in the fight against cancer.
Jerry Jolly, who serves as Mary Bird Perkins board chairman, began by publicly thanking an absent Renee and Bret Furr for their leadership in chairing the 2009 Fight Cancer Campaign. The campaign raised an impressive $837,000.
Shelley Mockler, chair of the 2010 Fight Cancer Campaign and member of Mary Bird Perkins board of directors, assisted by Louis Curet, presented the Louis D. Curet Volunteer Fundraiser Award to Greg and Ashley Stringfellow for their hard work and leadership with the Jeff Boss memorial Classic -- a golf tournament the couple started after former LSU equipment manager and personal friend, Jeff Boss, passed away from cancer in 2003. The proceeds from the tournament are donated to Mary Bird Perkins where Boss received his radiation treatment. Over the years the event has successfully raised more than $24,000.
Jolly and Hillar Moore presented Richard and Susan Lipsey with the Hillar C. Moore, Jr. Outstanding Service Award for their nearly 40 years of service and philanthropic support to Mary Bird Perkins. The two have served in virtually every volunteer capacity since the doors of Mary Bird Perkins opened in 1971, from volunteering at the front desk to serving on the board of directors. As leaders, donors and hands on volunteers, the Lipsey leadership is helping to ensure the future of cancer care for area cancer patients.
The following current volunteers received certificates for five or more years of dedicated service: Tom Adamek; Randy Kinchen; David Koch; Shelley Mockler; Bill O'Quin; Jon Schiller; Chuck Schwing; Gary Sligar; and Brad Supple.
