Prostate cancer awareness is important during any month but especially during September, the month designated as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men. During September, free prostate cancer screenings are offered to the public in hopes of reaching as many men as possible.
These screenings are for men age 50 and older who do not have a doctor or have not been screened in the past 12 months. Those at higher risk such as African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer should consider being screened beginning at age 45 (the prostate cancer screening includes a PSA blood test and physical exam performed by a doctor). The American Cancer Society recommends discussing prostate screening with your doctor to determine if it is right for you.

On August 23, 100-year-old Tennessee native Trent Lane completed his radiation treatment for skin cancer at Mary Bird Perkins in Baton Rouge. He was treated in 2002 as well.
"The people at Mary Bird Perkins have been splendid," Lane said. "I could never choose a person that has impacted me the most because they all have."
Always cheerful and talkative, Lane recalled joking around with his treatment team.
"I gave them problems every once in a while, but it was all in fun," he said.
Lane went to graduate school at LSU, earning a master's degree in physical chemistry. In 1936, he enlisted in the Air Force as part of the Civil Air Patrol.
Every day during his treatment time, Lane would offer science and aviation facts for Mary Bird Perkins staff. His treatment team came to expect his "fact of the day" and enjoyed learning from a man with so much life experience.
Lane remains physically active, competing in the Senior Olympics since 1991. Lane holds 17 world records and competes in the javelin, hammer throw, weight and shot put events. He is scheduled to compete again October 1.
Trent Lane, a 100-year-old patient, finished his treatment for skin cancer in August.

Since 1981, Red Stick Sports has been offering the latest in sports uniforms, equipment and corporate apparel to the south Louisiana area. Red Stick Sports has always been a great partner in our community and in the past year they have become partners with Mary Bird Perkins in its fight against cancer. Red Stick was the official volunteer T-shirt sponsor for the 2010 Mary Bird Perkins Merrill Lynch Open in June and also made Mary Bird Perkins the beneficiary of their 2010 Coaches’ Golf Tournament. Red Stick presented Mary Bird Perkins with a check for $1,000.
“My grandmother passed away in 2008 from cancer," said Brian Redman, Red Stick Sports general manager. "Cancer has affected our lives and family like so many others in our community. We made the decision to make Mary Bird Perkins the beneficiary of our annual Coaches' Golf Tournament so we can help fight cancer in our community. Red Stick Sports is very excited about partnering with a great organization such as Mary Bird Perkins and we look forward to a very successful tournament in 2011.”
We are so thankful for the wonderful support Red Stick Sports provides, and we look forward to continuing our partnership.

Gloria Graham of Baton Rouge has been selected as the 2010 recipient of the D. Jensen Holliday Award. Gloria was nominated by Julia Bradford Moore, the 2007 recipient of the Holliday Award. The award is given annually to honor and recognize an individual in the communities served by Mary Bird Perkins having made a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer.
