Timeline

1971 - Mary Bird Perkins Radiation Treatment Center opened on the campus of Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge.

1985 - Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center relocated to Essen Lane.
Installed the first 20-million-volt linear accelerator in the state.

1988 - Opened Hammond Center.

1995 - With community support, completed a major expansion of the Baton Rouge center.

1998 - Covington Center opened to meet the needs of patients on the Northshore.
Commissioned a linear accelerator -- the Clinac 2100-EX the first of its kind in the state and one of only two in the nation.

1999 - Commissioned the first Clinac 2100-EX with 120 multileaf collimator capability.

2000 - Only location in Louisiana to implement image fusion techniques combining separate PET scans and CT scans.

2001 - Implemented intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment technology that delivers the radiation dose more precisely.

2002 - IMRT technology expanded to Hammond and Covington centers.
C.A.R.E. Network established to expand and enhance programs and services to patients and the community.

2003 - Installed GE Discovery ST scanner that combines PET and CT imaging technologies helping physicians understand the exact location and extent of the disease and develop the most effective treatment plan possible.

2004 - Installed BrainLAB Novalis® Shaped Beam Radiosurgery and Radiotherapy, the first technology to incorporate both precise shaping to conform to the target and image guidance using x-rays and infrared localization.
Formed a medical physics partnership with Louisiana State University.

2005 - Installed the TomoTherapy HI-ART System®, a radiation treatment delivery system which combines 3-D imaging with highly targeted radiation beams.

Acquired the Early Bird, the Center’s mobile medical screening unit.

The Early Bird brings free cancer screenings to the medically underserved.
