Radiation treatment can be applied in a single session with a high dose of radiation (SRS) or in a series of treatments over a period of time, known as stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT). SRT uses essentially the same approach as SRS to deliver radiation to the target tissue. However, stereotactic radiotherapy uses multiple small fractions of radiation as opposed to one large dose. Giving multiple smaller doses may improve outcomes and minimize side effects. Stereotactic radiotherapy is used to treat tumors in the brain as well as treat malformations in the brain's blood vessels and certain noncancerous brain tumors.
Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery, including both stereotactic radiosurgery and fractionated radiotherapy, is available at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.
